Buying an acoustic guitar and the importance of the neck angle

Author: Nigel Rowles

Article:
It doesn't really matter the price range that you have in mind.
Years back a low cost guitar would be a nightmare to play, and
for a beginner it was worse, I had one for my first guitar.
These days with advanced machining and mass production
techniques there are a large number of guitar manufacturers
turning out quite good guitars at low cost. Regardless of the
price if you take any two guitars of the same make and model,
even with consecutive production numbers it's quite likely that
one will be easier to play than the other.

How well a guitar plays is determined by the action. The action
on a guitar is the distance between the underside of the strings
and the frets. The frets are the thin metal strips that lie
across the neck. The maximum distance is found in the area where
the neck and body join. If the distance is greater than say 3mm
then it will be harder to play the guitar up the neck than it
should be and for a beginner it can totally discouraging. Keep
in mind that that a small difference can mean a lot. A 4mm gap
is a big step up from 3mm.

There are four things that influence the action. 1. The Saddle
Height 2. The Nut Height 3. The Truss Rod Adjustment 4. The Neck
Angle

The first three can be adjusted. If the neck angle is bad then
adjusting the other three will bring about little change to the
action. Picture a guitar lying level on its back and you place a
straight edge along neck and extending down to touch the bridge.
The bridge is the piece of timber attached to the body of the
guitar that has the strings attached to it, and the saddle is
the (usually) white plastic strip that sits in the bridge and
has the strings running across it. When the neck angle is good
then the neck and the top of the bridge will be on the same
line. When the angle is bad then the straight edge will point to
a spot closer to where the bridge joins the body and is a really
bad case it would touch the body of the guitar first.

Now we cannot carry out this test in a music store, however what
we can do is sight down the neck and it's fairly easy to see
where the line of the neck points to, it should be in line with
the top of the bridge.

This is all probably a lot to absorb in one go, the important
thing is to be aware of the action and any good guitar
salesperson should know all this and be able to point them out
to you so you can make the best choice so you have a guitar that
is easy to play.

Lastly do not buy a guitar because you like the color of it, buy
the guitar that sounds good and plays well. Good Luck

Learn To Play Rock Guitar - Discover The Steps

Author: Chris Johnson

Rock music was probably the greatest thing that allowed the
guitar to become so popular. The high energy expressive sound
that the guitar makes when playing rock music is unlike any
other.!

We all have the desire to just pick up an electric guitar and
blast out one of the well known riffs like Deep Purple's "Smoke
On The Water".

Accomplishment and experience comes after getting the basics
right as it is with a lot of things in life. Getting the basics
right comes from regular and diligent practice. Your heroes
didn't just pick up a guitar and create an album. In fact some
of them have received a lot of formal musical training and even
have University Degrees in Music. The point is, be prepared to
put in regular practice and you will be rewarded.

There are many sources to turn to for instruction. Unfortunately
there are also a lot of scams around with regard to Learning
How To Play Rock Guitar.
They are not just confined to the
internet either. Some tutors with little experience are passing
themselves off as qualified instructors. There are also very
overpriced courses sold on the internet. But there are also some
excellent Rock Guitar Courses for those learning, that utilize
video technology and high quality audio so you can faithfully
reproduce what your tutor plays.

There are 3 main steps in being able to proficiently play rock
guitar. Obviously the basics come first.

For instance, your fingers need to build up resistance to the
feel of the steel strings. The tiny muscles need to be taught
where they have to move in playing one chord to another. Finger
joints need to become flexible to allow periods of play without
pain. This begins with slow methodical movements as you play
each chord with a clean sound.

When you first start, your guitar will most likely make a fuzzy
distorted sound if the strings are not held tight enough across
the frets. At first it will hurt to keep enough pressure on the
one spot for too long. Stop frequently, and stretch your fingers
and hands to keep them supple in the early stages. You will know
when you are able to play for longer periods.

There is a difference between acoustic and rock guitars. Rock
guitars are electric and need amplification in most cases.
Playing rock music also means you need to know the power chords.
Techniques such as string bending, sliding, and hammer-ons will
need to be mastered and then you can play some pretty good rock
solos.!

So as mentioned before, set yourself some scheduled practice
time and stick to it. Don't worry if it doesn't sound too great
at first. As long as you are enjoying it it will happen sooner
than you think. Make sure your instructor has experience in the
rock style. Below is one such person who has live band
experience.

Now you know what is expected, it is time to begin with some
basic chords and before long even your first riff..!!

What Guitar Scales Should You Study?

Author: Mike Hayes

What are scales? What guitar scales should you study? If you are
new to the guitar, and new to music, you are probably not even
quite sure exactly what a scale actually is, which certainly
adds to the aura of mystery that begins to surround the subject.

Learning and practicing scales can become an obsession for many
guitarists. Scales can "free your fingers and freeze your
brain", if you're not careful. Always keep in mind that scales
are part of the preparation work we do so we will be free to
express ourselves musically.

Scales are to the musician what skipping a rope is to a boxer,
it's part of the preparation work. Scales are simply a means to
an end. What guitar scales should you study depends on the type
of music you want to play. It's far better to master a small
number of scales and be able to apply these scales to many
musical settings.

The first thing to understand is that there are hundreds of
scales, to give you an idea of what you're up against, here's a
short sample of some of the names of scales starting with the
letter "L".

Leading Whole Tone Locrian Locrian #2 Locrian b4 Locrian Flat 4
Locrian Minor Locrian natural 2 Locrian Natural 2nd Locrian
Sharp 2nd Lydian Lydian 7b Lydian Augmented Lydian b7 Lydian
contracted Lydian diminished Lydian Diminished 1 Lydian
Diminished 2 Lydian Dominant Lydian dominant scale4 Lydian Minor
Lydian Sharp 2nd

Keep in mind, this is only a sample from a very long list of
scales. Each one of these scales can be played in 12 different
keys as guitarists we have the added issue of multiple fingering
options on the guitar fretboard. What guitar scales should we
study is a very important question, to be honest five minutes
thought deciding what to practice is much better that five hours
of haphazard practice.

Scales are the building blocks from which all music is created.
we use scales to create melodies (horizontal structures), chords
(vertical structures), arpeggios (oblique structures).

Scales in themselves are not music they are simply our musical
alphabet. In the hands of a skilled musician they can create
music.

Three things to consider when learning scales:

(a) there's the intellectual aspect, data memory information
i.e., the names of the notes and their scale step numbers.

(b) applying this knowledge to the guitar, in order to do this
successfully we need to be able to identify all the notes on the
fingerboard by name, not simply by a fingering pattern.

(c) motor skill training i.e., speed is a byproduct of accuracy,
with the right amount of accurate repetitions, scales will be
stored in the brain as a reflex function, training very slowly
to avoid mistakes.

Where to start:

The first scale guitar players should study would be the minor
pentatonic scale. the minor pentatonic scale is a five note
scale, (penta = five) found throughout the world.

Example of the minor pentatonic scale in the key of A would be:

A - C - D - E - G

The second scale guitar players should study would be the blues
scale. the blues scale is one of the most frequently used
scales. It is also important because it is the first real scale
of American origin.

The blues scale is a six note scale, one way of thinking of this
scale would be to treat the blues scale as a minor pentatonic
scale with a flattened 5th.

Example of the Blues scale in the key of A would be:

A - C - D - Eb - E - G

The third scale guitar players should study would be the major
pentatonic scale. The major pentatonic scale is another five
note scale.

Example of the major pentatonic scale in the key of A would be:

A - B - C# - E - F#

It is thought that the pentatonic scales represent early stages
of musical development, because it is found, in different forms,
in most of the world's music. These two pentatonic scales
together with the blues scale are used to create riffs, licks
and solos on many popular recordings.

What guitar scales should you study is an important question,
you can save a lot of time by learning these three scales first.
Good luck finding which scales that are right for your music.

5 Steps In Learning To Play The Electric Guitar

Author: Chris Johnson

The first and most obvious step is to get the guitar and
equipment that you will be needing. This means a reasonable
guitar, decent amplifier with enough grunt, robust and hard
wearing connecting cables. If you also have a set of headphones
lying around, then family and neighbors will be thankful and
more supportive as you practice Learning To Play The Electric
Guitar.

As far as the amp goes, if you are going to be doing more than
just playing to yourself, then get one that will do the job in
terms of power and distortion free output. You can get an
effects box later to add good distortion later. Your amp may
even have it as a feature.

The next step is to get to grips with your electric guitar. Have
a play with the controls and learn how to tune it up. With new
strings there will be slippage and stretching so you must master
the art of tuning your guitar before you can start to play
anything.

Talking about strings, your electric guitar probably came with
standard steel strings. These will cause you a lot of pain in
your finger tips as you continually press down on them when you
first start to form the chords and notes. One option is replace
or mix them with some nylon strings and the other is to source
some "ultra slick Rock 'n Roll" or fine strings. These are still
steel but very fine and require less pressure. Try an acoustic
guitar and you will see what I mean about nylon strings.

Step number 3 is have a plan... Just like so many things in
life, experience and accomplishment comes after getting the
basics right. Getting the basics right comes from regular and

diligent practice. Your heroes didn't just pick up a guitar and
create an album. In fact some of them have received a lot of
formal musical training and even have University Degrees in
Music. The point is, be prepared to put in regular practice and
you will be rewarded.

The next step is to know the sort of music you want to play
first. Put on the ones you are keen on and even have a go at
picking out some of the notes as you play along. You will be
surprised how easy it can be to follow a small piece here and
there.. List out the tracks you like so you can discuss them
with your instructor or playing friends.

The last step is to begin with some lessons and learn how to
play properly. There are a number of ways to get lessons. From
friends who are already playing and you like what you hear,
attend classes, or the most flexible way is via the site below
where you get Free lessons. This can also be the least expensive
and expose you to people who have the real live experience.
Right, it is now time for you to begin with some basic chords

How To Play Lead Guitar

Author: Chris Johnson

How do you learn to play lead guitar? There are so many ways
available now but not all of them are good at teaching you how
to play lead guitar. You can take private lessons, you can teach
yourself, you can attempt to learn utilizing written,
do-it-yourself courses or Internet based courses-or you can
purchase instructional video's offered for sale by the actual
musician of the songs and leads you are trying to learn.

The first and most obvious step before learning to play lead
guitar is to get yourself a guitar and equipment that you will
need. This means a reasonable guitar with a decent sound, a
pick, a shoulder strap, a tuning pipe, and a decent protective
carry case or cover.

You are better to buy an electric guitar as the effects you want
to be able to emulate are difficult to achieve with an acoustic
guitar. This means you are also going to need to purchase a
clean sounding amplifier that will also probably come with some
effects built in. Make sure the cables you get are robust and
flexible as well.

Lead guitar playing usually involves picking out the notes and
applying techniques (such as string bending, slurs etc) to
create the desired sounds. But before you leap into this you
obviously need to know just where the notes are and how to play
them. Now the open notes (the bare strings) are: E A D G B E.
Sometimes it is easier to remember them by making up a rhyme
such as "Every Adult Digs Good Beer Early.." This uses the first
letters of each word to represent the notes of the strings from
top to bottom.

The next step is to get to grips with your new guitar. Have a
play with the guitar and learn how to tune it up. With new

strings there will be slippage and stretching so you must master
the art of tuning your guitar before you can start to play
anything.

Talking about strings, if you decided on an electric guitar, you
may want to consider using ultra slim steel strings. They are
easier to press when forming the notes and quicker to get around
the fretboard. The frets are the raised thin bars fitted to the
long neck of the guitar and are fixed into place on your guitar.

Just like so many things in life, experience and accomplishment
comes after getting the basics right. Getting the basics right
comes from regular and diligent practice. Your heroes didn't

just pick up a guitar and create an album. The point is, be

prepared to put in regular practice and you will be rewarded.

Write out a list of the sort of music you want to play first.
Play what you are keen on and even have a go at picking out some
of the notes. You will be surprised how easy it can be to follow

a small piece here and there.. List out the tracks you like so

you can discuss them with your instructor or even in forums.
Perhaps play along with a friend who has a guitar so you can
pace each other.

Now you are ready to begin with some lessons and learn how to
play lead guitar properly. There are a number of ways to get
lessons. From friends who are already playing the guitar and you

Free Online Acoustic Guitar Lesson: Secrets to Mastering Your

Author: John Hughes

You can spend money on a private instructor and countless hours
practicing, but if you are not doing the right things it will
take years to accomplish what some players seem to master
overnight. The reason for this is not because they have more
talent, but either someone revealed to them or they took it upon
themselves to master the acoustic guitar using a similar, if not
same approach as outlined in this free online acoustic guitar
lesson
. The two methods you are about to read will
dramatically increase your knowledge of the acoustic guitar.
This free online acoustic guitar lesson aims to unloc
k the secrets of the guitar
so you will be able to quickly
and effortless learn new things.

The first point in today's free online acoustic guitar
lesson
is to learn the names of all the notes on the guitar.
Many players can tell the names of the open strings and probably
up the neck on each string up to about the fifth or seventh
fret, but how many can instantly name off all the notes in the
higher registrars of the guitar neck. Unless you're one of the
few who can I suggest you first get a diagram of the fret board
that lists each note and study it intently. Second, sit down
with your guitar without the diagram and name off as many of the
notes as you can while you play them. This is the most important
point of this free online acoustic guitar lesson because
it lays the foundation for the next step.

After you have a good working knowledge of the notes on the
fret-board you will find that it is much easier to find new
chords and scales. To illustrate this point play some of your
favorite scales and chords. Now, using the knowledge acquired in
this free online acoustic guitar lesson try to find the
same chords and scales in different positions on the fret-board.
Being able to quickly and easily learn and identify chord shapes
and scale positions will increase your ability to find new and
innovative ways to play the guitar.

You now have the secrets to improving your guitar playing ten
fold. Do not delay. Find a diagram of the fret-board at your
local music store or onlin
e
that shows the names of all the notes. Drill them into
your brain then practice your scales and chords. Move them
around to different positions and explore the neck. All to often
guitar instructors and beginning players fail to utilize the
methods I have shown in this free online acoustic guitar
lesson
. Don't pass up this opportunity to truly excel as a
guitar player.

A Fun And Easy Way To Learn How To Play The Guitar

Author: Darren Gibson

If you are searching for an easy way to learn how to play the
guitar, reading this article is a great place to start. For
those who remember learning to play a musical instrument at
school, there will be memories of crotchets, quavers and
concepts to get your head round before ever being allowed to get
your hands on something to play. By the time you had gone
through the theory, all the excitement of wanting to play began
to dwindle away...

Luckily, today's music students, whatever their age, have the
benefit of various teaching methods - and don't necessarily need
a "teacher" in the traditional sense. You can buy videos and
DVDs and even download complete courses from the internet and
learn how to play at your own pace and without pressure.

Online and downloadable courses are a really easy way to learn
how to play the guitar, and anyone with a computer and internet
connection can access them without having to wait 30 days for a
physical product to be delivered.

The way these courses are designed, the focus is on enjoying the
learning experience and working at your own pace. You don't have
to worry that your hour of tutoring is over, and if there is
something you need to go over again, simply scroll back or press
rewind and practice to your heart's content.

Designers of these courses realize that they need to keep your
attention and focus for the training method to be a success. As
such, most courses are designed around "games" to help with
techniques such as identifying notes and perform some of the
boring tasks necessary to be accomplished at playing the guitar.
You can also see close up what the tutor's hands are doing and
what the action sounds like so you can compare what you are
doing with the actions on screen.

As well as being an easy way to learn how to play the guitar,
this type of course is also very cost effective. If you take
lessons via the traditional method, at say $40 a lesson, it
doesn't take long before you have spent a few hundred dollars.
Given that downloadable courses range from free to a hundred or
so dollars, many people who are put off by the cost of formal
tutoring are able to learn to play the guitar without the worry
of finding money for lessons or having enough cash to complete
the course. Another benefit of this type of training is that the
course is not tied to one person. There is nothing to stop a
father learning alongside his son or daughter, sharing the
experience and enjoyment. Similarly, if you are a parent with
more than one child, the cost savings will be multiplied.

Cheap Acoustic Guitar: What You Need to Know Before You Buy

Author: John Hughes

Alright, so you know you want to play acoustic guitar but money
is tight. You want a cheap acoustic guitar but it still
has to sound good right. Do not fear. Locating a cheap acoustic
guitar that will play well is not as difficult as you might
think. In this article I aim to point you in the right direction
for finding a cheap acoustic guitar.

When searching for a cheap acoustic guitar you will
probably want to direct your focus on the bigger name brands
like Takam
ine
, Fender and Ibanez. I know your thinking that these are the more expensive models
and they are, but these companies also make beginner models that
are relatively cheap and still have good production quality.
After all they have a reputation to keep and many times these
companies hope that if you are satisfied you might become a life
time customer. So stick to these top three if you wish to find a
cheap acoustic guitar that will still sound great.

Since your going to be buying a cheap acoustic guitar you
might as well buy it brand new. Buying a guitar from someone who
once used it as their first guitar usually means that the guitar
is not in good shape. Most beginners make the mistake of not
properly taking care of their instruments. Not because they're
lazy, but because they just haven't learned how to yet. My first
guitar looks like hell. I know it can be tempting seeing
cheap acoustic guitars on eBay for $20 or $30 dollars but
believe me you will get what you pay for. Instead go to your
local music store or shop online at ZZsounds, or Amazon. I would recommend budgeting between $150
and $300 for your first acoustic guitar.

I hope that this article helps you to choose a great cheap
acoustic guitar
to learn with. Remember to stick to the top
three brands because they will have beginner series models that
are cheap and constructed well. Also buy new. Resist the urge to
buy a used guitar and I promise you will be much happier with
your choice.
